Installed in the heart of a modern atrium in Shanghai, Gathering is a large-scale, suspended sculpture by renowned sculptor Matt Devine. This dynamic installation features a fluid, weightless flock of vibrant red birds, seemingly frozen in mid-flight as they spiral around a central architectural column.

With overall dimensions of 23 feet wide x 23 feet deep x 8 feet tall (L×W×H), the sculpture occupies the upper zone of a multi-story space, suspended approximately 30 meters (100 feet) above ground level. The flock encircles the column in a complete 360-degree motion, creating a continuous sense of upward momentum and organic flow.

As the lead CAD designer on this project, I translated Matt’s vision into precise technical drawings and 3D models used for laser cutting and fabrication. My work ensured accurate scale, balance, and fluidity—enabling the sculpture’s components to be engineered and installed with precision within a complex architectural environment.

The final result is a visually striking piece that blends fine art with structural elegance, transforming the space into a place of both kinetic energy and contemplative stillness.
